We're proud to announce that Dr. John N. Kraeuter, Associate Director of the Haskin Shellfish Research Laboratory has received the
David H. Wallace Award from the National Shellfisheries Association.
The National Shellfisheries Association is a 90 year old organization whose purposes are to encourage research on molluscs, crustaceans and associated organisms with emphasis on species of economic importance known as "shellfish", to gather and disseminate scientific and technical information on shellfish, and to promote and advance shellfisheries research and application of results to the shellfish industry. The organization publishes the Journal of Shellfish Research, holds annual meetings and has two awards: Honored Life Member and the David H. Wallace Award.
Recipients of the David H. Wallace Award are nominated by an Awards Committee who "selects individuals whose actions most demonstrate the principles and actions concerned with programs in shellfisheries, aquaculture, and conservation as exemplified by Mr. David H. Wallace during his lifetime in promoting understanding, knowledge, and cooperation among industry members, the academic community, and all levels of government, and who has had outstanding success in bringing together shellfish scientists and industry officials for the benefit of shellfisheries".
Dr. Kraeuter was the 11th individual in the 90 year history of the organization to receive the award. In the presentation ceremony Mike Castagna presented the award for the Executive Committee of NSA. Durng the ceremony Mike noted that it is difficult to find a person with the interest, background and personality to qualify for the position, but the Executive Committee of National Shellfisheries voted unanimously to bestow the award on John. The award noted John's integration of business, science and conservation, his service to NSA as a member of a large number of committees, and his term as President, where he set forth a number of goals that included establishment of an Industry Committee and its installation as an official part of the Executive Board of the organization. It was recently announced that the goal of fiscal stability John set forth during his term as President was reached. This goal was to have at least one year's operations budget, including journal production, in reserve, to assure the long term viability of NSA. These goals and their achievement, even after his term as President was over, are typical of the integration of science, business and personal skills that indicate the dedication John has to fostering the best in NSA and in shellfisheries.
